💡 Meaning of a Wireless Gateway
A wireless gateway is a device that connects a local area network (LAN) — typically your home or office network — to another network, such as the Internet (WAN).
It acts as a “gateway” or entry point for data packets traveling between the internal (local) network and external networks.
⚙️ Main Functions of a Wireless Gateway
Wireless Access Point (AP)
➤ Provides WiFi connectivity to wireless devices like smartphones, laptops, or smart appliances.
➤ Allows wireless communication within the local network.
Router
➤ Directs (routes) data packets between the local network (LAN) and the external network (WAN/Internet).
➤ Determines the best path for data transmission.
Security Functions (Firewall / NAT)
➤ Protects the local network from unauthorized access from the Internet.
➤ Filters traffic and hides internal IP addresses from external networks.
🔧 Implementation Types
A wireless gateway can be implemented in several forms:
Software Gateway — runs on a computer or server.
Hardware Gateway — a physical device such as a WiFi router or modem-router combo.
Hybrid — most modern routers combine both hardware and embedded software.
